Bariatric surgery
Bariatric surgery, also called obesity and metabolic surgery, is surgical treatment intended for patients suffering from severe obesity or a metabolic syndrome such as type 2 diabetes.
It is carried out within multidisciplinary teams, in conjunction with the attending physician. This support is part of a personalized project for the patient.
Common bariatric surgeries are:
- Sleeve gastrectomy
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
- Adjustable gastric band
- Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch
- Single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy
Being overweight can increase the potential risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, etc.
Not all overweight patients are suitable for bariatric surgery. Certain medical guidelines must be followed to benefit from it.
